Hybrids can be extremely useful to get yourself out of trouble on the golf course. Hitting the ball low for out of the trees. Chipping around the green. And today, hitting the ball out of fairly thick rough! The hybrids have a fairly low center of gravity. Therefore, they get the ball up in the air fairly easily. Because the shaft of a hybrid is slightly longer than the matching iron, it is far easier to get more clubhead speed, which you need when hitting out of thick rough. In today's PGA and LPGA Tours, the 2, 3, and 4 hybrids have become standard equipment in the player's bags.
When purchasing hybrid clubs, make sure to hit them before buying to ensure how far each of these clubs goes. In my experience, the matching hybrid will go further in the air but stop fairly quickly. For example, a 4 hybrid will go further in the air than a 4 iron, but the 4 iron will have more roll to be about the same.
