Last week on Short Game Saturday, we discussed using a putter from just off the green. This is for a situation when the hole is fairly close to the edge of the green. However, when the hole is a lot further away, there is a lot more emphasis on the feel. Using a hybrid (2 or 3)and using it like a putter, you can have a fairly consistent result.
The Method.
Get into your putting stance and take your normal putting grip. Do a few practice swings to judge how hard you are going to hit the shot. Try and hit the shot about the same strength as you hit a putt of the same distance. The major difference is you do not have to take the fringe into account as the hybrid will lift the ball over the fringe, and the ball will roll down to the hole!
This, like most short game shots, will take some practice to get the feel of the ball off the clubface and the amount of roll you can expect on this shot. Remember, this is a shot for those of you who are not very good chippers. But I still prefer a chip shot with a straight-faced club in this instance for those of you who are. So, off t0 the practice green, you go to add another short game shot to your ever-growing short game repertoire learned at the Mel Sole Golf School.
