This week David Olberding, lead instructor at the Mel Sole Golf School, talks about using a tee drill.  Learn How to hit Crisper Pitch Shots on the Golf Course.

Most higher handicap golfers struggle with hitting the ball first.  They attempt to hit the ball in the air instead of allowing the loft on the clubface to do the lifting.  Hitting the ball first and then the ground gives the ball the necessary loft and the necessary spin to get the ball to stop quickly.  Check out this great "Tee Drill" to improve that all-important pitch shot.

The Method.

Set p a row of golf balls (about 10 or 12 in a row) and then place a tee about 2 inches in front of each ball.  Have the ball position about 2 inches inside your lead heel, which means the tees were directly off the lead heel.  Go ahead and hit some pitch shots focusing on the tee rather than the ball.  Attempt to "shear off" the top of the tee each time you hit a shot.  This will give you a more downward hit compressing the ball between the clubface and the ground.  This will automatically give you the spin necessary to stop the ball on the green fairly quickly.  The less roll you can get on a pitch shot, the more control you have on your distance selection.
