To move the ball either left to right or right to left at will is not as difficult as it seems. Back when I was a beginner golfer in South Africa, I cut out a series of golf tips by Jack Nicklaus. They were in the Sunday newspaper every week, presented in the form of a caricature strip. I used to cut these out and keep them in a folder for me to read over and over again. In these golf tips, I learned to fade and draw the ball with Jack's advice.
The Method.
Lay down an alignment stick pointing where you want the ball to end up. Put another alignment stick to where you want the ball to start to the right of the target. Place your feet on the starting line and place the clubface at ninety degrees to the target line. Then go ahead and swing normally. You want to close the clubface to the body line but square to the target. This will now produce a nice draw right back to the target.
Do exactly the opposite to hit a fade. Place the alignment stick pointing to your target. Place the other stick pointing to where you want the ball to start to the left of the target. Make a normal swing. Because the clubface is open to the target line, you will produce a nice fade that will curve back to the target.
