Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

In this month’s video golf tip, I  share a drill that will help you correct a swing flaw that quite a few golfers have.  Laying off the club on the backswing. Using what he calls a “layoff wall,” the drill will help you to understand where the club should be through your backswing.  Plus, you can practice this drill against a wall in your home–at least on an outside wall!

Where do you stand?

Use a Wall to Get the Club on Plane.  Stand against an outside wall and let your butt touch the wall.  Start by slowly taking the club bank and hinging the wrists, so the club works up and not around.  Swing through and again, let the club work more in front of you, and don’t touch the wall.  Once you do half swings with this drill, you are ready to go to a longer swing.

Don’t Rush this Drill.

Remember, the slower you do this drill, the quicker the body will learn… Hit some 9 o clock to 3 o clock swings with a short club like a pitching wedge or 9 iron. Once you can do that without touching the wall on both the backswing and followthrough, you are ready to take this to the range and try it.

The Test.

Can you hit full shots and not hit an imaginary wall on the driving range?  Get a friend to stand behind you and watch you swing.  They will be able to tell you whether your club would have hit the wall on the backswing or not.  Remember, there is perception and reality in the golf swing.  What you think you are doing and what you are doing are two completely different things.  So at first, don’t be afraid to exaggerate the motion, almost feeling like you are taking the club a little on the outside.  With a little persistence, you will get the club on plane consistently and hit the ball a whole lot straighter!

Thanks for watching – Use a Wall to Get the Club on Plane.  If you don’t have an artificial wall

like me, be sure to use an outside wall! Maybe even put a sock over the iron head.
