Monthly Golf Tip by the Mel Sole Golf School

The month's tip is focused on How Do Female Golfers Get More Distance?.  Ladies do not have the strength of men. Therefore, they need to focus on a few important things to maximize their distance potential.  We will focus on the width in part 1 of this article.

Don't forget to check out Part 2 next month for the rest of the story! Downswing, Lag, and Extension will be discussed!

Start with Width!

Ladies need to start with the correct backswing to maximize their distance potential. Women golfers who do not have a lot of upper body strength tend to pick the club up with their arms.  Jenny Buchanan, our female instructor, demonstrates this in picture #1. This causes a lack of shoulder turn, loss of coil, and a decrease in the clubhead arc.

Swing the club back all in one piece to get the club as wide a possible to increase the arc as in picture #2

And subsequently increasing the shoulder turn and coil in picture #3. Again, this is a great position at the top of the backswing.

Increasing the backswing's width and increasing the coil will create a really good wind-up on the backswing.  When the downswing is started in the correct sequence, it will produce significantly more clubhead speed. As you can see, a long backswing is not necessary for more distance. A good coil is far more important!

I hope you enjoyed How Do Female Golfers Get More Distance? Part 1. In Part 2 of this article, we will be discussing the start of the downswing, lag and an easy drill to help with both!
