The Basic Technique.

There are two mistakes that most higher handicaps and beginners make in a bunker.

1. They do not take a big enough swing.  Think of it this way.  Swing twice as hard as a pitch shot of the same distance.  In other words, if you have a 30-yard bunker shot, swing as hard as a 60-yard pitch shot while hitting about 2 inches behind the ball.  This will work most of the time. The only factor that can influence that is the texture of the sand.

2. They do not turn through impact.  Make sure you turn your chest through to the target on the follow-through.  Most poor bunker shots are caused by swinging the arms and not using the body rotation through the shot.  Finish with a nice follow-through as you would in a long pitch shot. Sometimes swing in the bunker without a ball, focusing on swinging right through!

For the better players, take a given amount of balls, maybe 20, and play them to a particular pin position, then go and putt them out.  Count the total number of shots played.  Now you have set a baseline. The next time you practice your bunker shots, count out the same amount of balls and see if you can beat the previous target.  Replay the shots if you do not! Each time you practice your bunker play, you must improve your total.  Get to the point where over 50% of the shots are 1 putts.  At that point, maintain with each session.
