Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

Mel Sole explains why chipping with a less lofted club beats chipping with a lofted club time and time again! As the saying goes, KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid!

There are 3 reasons why it is better to chip with a low lofted club.

  1. You are going to take a much smaller swing, allowing for less error.
  2. The roll-out of a low lofted club is much more predictable because of less spin.  If the lofted club is nipped just right, the ball will have spin, which will make the ball check and come up short of the flag.  On the next hole, you swing harder, don't get the check, and the ball rolls too far past the flag.
  3. The third reason is also the most important.  The miss-hit shots will finish closer to the hole because you are not swinging hard. A miss-hit with a 6 iron will finish up far better than a mis-hit with a lob wedge.

Using this chipping system has worked for me for the last 35 years.  Create your own system, so you know what club to chip with when you have a shot that is half air time and half ground time.  A one-third air time and two-thirds ground time, and finally a club that is one-quarter airtime and three quarters ground time.  This is a foolproof system that will stand you in good stead for the rest of your golfing life!
