Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

In this month's Mel in Motion video golf tip, Mel demonstrates how to "swing the handle, not the clubhead"—a technique that will go far in your quest for better bunker play.

This sand shot tip is aimed at the higher handicapped golfer.  Most higher handicaps struggle in the sand.  The main reason is they try to help the ball out of the sand instead of letting the club do the work.  The Sand Wedge design makes sand shots easier.  Use it correctly.  Sand Wedges have "bounce," which helps the club slide through the sand and not dig.

Poor Bunker Play - Why?

Most poor bunker play comes from swing the arm and not using the torso. (or body)  When the body does not rotate through the shot, the clubhead passes the hands, and a scooping motion is produced.  The handle of the club stops right at impact, and the head continues. There is not much clubhead speed with this type of shot, and the ball will more than likely stay in the bunker.

Good Bunker Play - Swing the Handle!

Take your sand wedge and go into a bunker with no balls.  Take up your normal bunker shot stance, and now swing the club and hit the sand while concentrating on making sure the handle keeps moving through impact.  At the finish of the swing, the handle should be above the level of your hips. As long as you keep the handle moving, the shots will come out a lot easier. So, always Swing the grip for good sand play.
