Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

The Flop Shot is one big beautiful swing that you see players like Mickelson or Tiger Woods take. But, despite appearances, it's also a very high-risk, low reward type of swing. The High Soft Lob Shot will give you the same results but with less risk. Watch this month's Mel in Motion video golf tip. Learn this important technique!

The Method.

The lob shot is a pitch shot without the release.  The secret is in the angle of the wrist position of the lower hand. As you take your backswing, the writs will cup at the top of the swing.  The wrist must stay cupped throughout the execution of this shot to keep the clubface open and at the finish.  The clubface should be facing the sky at the end.  As my friend and mentor, Phil Ritson used to say,  "You should be able to balance a glass of water on the clubface at the end of this shot."

Ensure all your weight is on the front foot at the start of this shot, similar to a pitch shot.

The Execution.

The key to the execution of this shot is rapid body rotation. This motion allows the cupped rear wrist to stay cupped throughout the shot.  If you don't rotate fast enough, the speed of the club head will pass the hands, and you will end up flipping at the shot.  Not a pretty result!

Practice this shot over and over, not worrying too much about the result in the beginning.  Focus on good technique.  As your technique improves, the results will come along until you are ready to take this awesome shot to the course!
