Power Producers - Wrist Hinge and Full Turn.

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2 and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Many students of our golf school share a common goal: getting more distance from their swing. Our Class A PGA Instructor, David Olberding, demonstrates two important factors in creating more clubhead speed in this month's video golf tip.

What are the two Power Producers?  Wrist Hinge and Full Shoulder Turn.  Without these two important parts in your golf swing, you will never learn to hit the golf ball with any power!

Wrist Hinge.

We typically see with our students in the golf school a backswing with a tiny wrist hinge.  This prevents the all-important "lag" on the downswing and a loss of clubhead speed.  Practice at home in front of a mirror, and see if you can hinge the wrists so that you get about a 90-degree angle between the lead forearm and the club shaft.  If you currently do not do this, practicing at home is a great way to ingrain this move.

Shoulder Turn.

Another position we typically see with our golf school students at the top of their backswing is a lack of shoulder turn.  As we age, it gets tougher and tougher to maintain flexibility unless working out every day.  So to make it easier to turn the shoulders, you must turn the hips.  By flaring the back foot out about 30-degrees, you can get a slightly bigger hip rotation and a bigger shoulder rotation.

The combination of a better wrist hinge and a bigger shoulder turn will have you hitting the ball further in no time!
