Today is Thursday, January 26th, 2017, and we present Technical Thursday in our ongoing golf series.  Mel Sole will discuss how to get the feel of a proper wrist hinge in the backswing to create speed and power.

I have spoken about keeping the grip pressure soft in previous posts to get a good wrist hinge at the top of the backswing.  But unfortunately, some of my students still cannot get a proper wrist cock and therefore lose some distance.  So here is a drill you can do on the range to get a feel for a 90-degree wrist hinge.

In your address position, start the backswing with an immediate wrist cock.  Make sure the wrists are cocked at about 90 degrees.  Now turn to the top of your backswing, maintaining that angle all the way to the top.  You now have a 90-degree wrist cock at the top of your backswing.  Repeat over and over.  This is something you can do at home if you wish.

Once you go back to the course, go back to keeping the grip pressure soft, and now that you have the correct feel, allow your wrists to hinge at the top and swing through.  You will notice a lot more clubhead speed.
