Monthly Golf Tip by the Mel Sole Golf School

This month's tip request comes from Wendy Morris of Pawleys Island, who asks, "How do female golfers get more distance?"

There are three parts to this article.

Part 1 was  The Backswing.

Check it out here.

Part 2 was  The Start of the Downswing.

The Lag, and The Follow-Through. Check it out here.

So go back and read these tips first if you have not already read them.

Part 3: The extension - the accuracy part!

Power is totally useless if there is no accuracy!  The ball will go further in the woods. To consistently hit the ball straight, the clubhead must travel "down the line," which means the clubhead must travel towards the target just before and after impact. If you have followed Part 1 and Part 2 of this article, the clubhead path should be correct. However, I have worked with students who still have trouble with this part of the swing, so I recommend the "Extension - Rotation" drill.

1. Swing the club back so that your left arm (for right-handed golfers) is parallel to the ground.

2. Start the downward movement, making sure that the hands stay close to the body.

3. Extend the arms with the clubhead traveling slightly to the right of your target.

4. Finish the swing with both arms extended out in front of you, with the clubhead pointing slightly to the right of your target.

Doing this drill, along with the other two parts of this article, should have you hitting the ball longer and straighter than you ever have before!
