Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Improving your chipping technique needs to be done where your entire focus is on the technique and NOT the result.  In this month's golf tip,  I explain how to accomplish this in a new and easy manner.  The secret is in working on a technique without a target.  This allows you to focus on the correct mechanics and not on the result.  Get this correct first, and THEN go and work on touch!

The Technique.

Take a club that you would typically chip with and go into your setup.  Hit a few chips shots concentrating on keeping the lead wrist flat and not allow it to cup or break down.  There should be no target during this session—only a good technique.  Keep the handle moving at the same speed as the clubhead.  At the finish, there should still be a straight line down the lead arm and the shaft.

The Result.

Once you have the ability to chip the ball with good technique over and over again, then it is time to start learning to control distance.  Find a landing spot and chip to it.  If you can land the ball on your landing spot with good technique, you have become a good chipper.
