One of the important aspects of a good putting stroke is swinging the putter head straight back and straight through. This helps you hit the ball on the line you have picked consistently.  The ability to hit your putt along the intended line is a learned skill.  Here are a few things you can do to achieve this.

The Drills.

Take two pieces of two by four and create a track slightly wider than the width of your putter head. Practice swinging the putter head back and forth without touching the track.  If you are a beginner, start with the track about 1/2 an inch wider than your putter head. Then slowly close that gap until you have the skill to move it back and forth with a minimal margin of error.  For better golfers, use two empty golf ball boxes.  This will give you great feedback.  If the heel or the toe of the putter touches one of the boxes, it will fall over, letting you know the stroke still needs work.

You can also use a club or alignment stick to place across the track at 90 degrees and slightly in front of the ball.  As you follow-through, make sure the putter face is at 90 degrees to the stick.  Now you have a putting stroke that can hit the ball along the intended line time after time.

At this point, it is time to get out the putting mirror.  This was discussed on Training Aid Tuesday #85.  Get to work holing 20 to 30 putts in a row to improve your confidence.

The final aspect to work on to become a great putter is feel.  Use the "Feel Drill" I discussed in Short Game Saturday #62.  The combination of the confidence from putting 20 or 30 balls into the hole with the putting mirror PLUS the feel drill will almost eliminate 3 putting, and you will have a lot more one-putts in your rounds as well!  Enjoy!
