Monthly Video Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Most people hook because the club's toe passes the club's heel through impact, putting spin on the ball that makes the ball curve to the left for right-handed golfers.  The Hit and Hold is the true cure for preventing this.  I have worked on this move myself for many years, and one night while sitting going through old Phil Ritson instructional videos, I had a huge epiphany, and I heard Phil say to his student that the lead arm must fold under through impact and into the follow-through.  I had never heard that, but it made so much sense to me.  It also explained that for years I had been working on a move with a missing piece!  That one move brought all the pieces together and made this move so simple and yet so effective.

The missing piece!

I want to pass this move to those of you that tend to hook the ball, sometimes out of nowhere!  I heard Phil talking about "Hitching a ride" and thought he talked about the release for years.  But think about it.  When as a young person traveling around hitching a ride, you never kept the lead arm straight. It always folded over!  As Archimedes yelled "Eureka" (I have found it!), so did I.

So as you work on the Hit and Hold of the lead wrist, allow the lead arm to fold through the impact area.  If you are doing it correctly, the club shaft will release up!  That's the move to tell you that you have it!  You too can yell, Eureka!
