Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

This month we talk about Drills for increasing your power.  Every golfer that ever lived wants more power. So tell a PGA or LPGA player that a certain driver or a certain shaft will give them an extra 10 yards.  For sure, you'll see them on the range testing to see whether that club will do what the manufacturers say!

But with the tried and true drills that I use for my students all the time, I'm sure these drills will have you hitting the ball further without any new fancy equipment!

Body Rotation.

You cannot increase clubhead speed with your arms.  It would help if you had a lot of body rotation. Here is a drill to start getting to feel a faster body rotation.  Take a ball, stand on the range, and throw the ball underhand without turning your body.  Note the distance the ball goes.  Then throw another ball, but this time allow your body to rotate through as fast as you can. The ball will go a lot further.  Once you have thrown the ball a few times, pick up a club and see if you can get the same feel without increasing your arm speed.

Extension down the line.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this video, power is useless without accuracy.  The accuracy is helped by trying to keep the clubhead online to the target as long as possible. Place an alignment stick in the ground along your toe line and about 4 feet in front of you.  Start slowly, and hit a few shots and see if you can miss the alignment stick.  If not, keep doing small swings (9 o clock to 3 o clock), extending the club out in front of you and your clubhead moving to the target.

Once you combine both the body rotation and the extension down the line, you will have a more powerful and accurate golf swing!
