Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

In this month's Mel In Motion video golf tip, I expose two common power leaks.  Casting and the Chicken Wing! Have a look and learn how to get more distance through increased power.

Leak #1 Casting.

When you start the downswing with the arms and not the lower body, you tend to lose the angle between the lead arm and the shaft.  The longer you can keep the angle from the top, the more clubhead speed is generated, and the further you'll hit the ball. Secondly, when you cast, the clubhead will pass the hands through the impact position causing the clubface to close.  Again, an offline shot will result.

Leak #2 Chicken Wing.

When the lead rm breaks down through impact, there can be no rotation of the lead arm, and the clubface will be left open.  When the lead forearm fails to rotate, you cannot get the toe of the clubface to turn to be square at impact. An offline shot will result.  Also, the clubface stays open.  This adds loft to the club.  So a higher shot with less distance will result!

The Cure.

The drill I teach for both maladies is the 9 o clock to 3 o clock drill.  Take your lead arm on the backswing to the 3 o clock position.  The arm should be parallel to the ground.  Starting with a slight forward movement of the hips, swing through, allowing the body to rotate until the hips point at the target.  The lead arm should stop at the 9 o clock position.  The arm should be again parallel to the ground.

This is one of the drills I teach the most in my golf school.  Avoiding two common power leaks has helped more golfers than I can count.  Do this drill until you can hit the ball in the middle of the clubface, dead straight for at least 10 to 15 shots.  You are now ready to start putting this move into your full swing and start gaining more distance.
