One of the faults we teachers work on daily is the chicken wing!  The chicken wing occurs when the lead arm collapses through impact, causing you to shorten the arc between you and the ball.  This causes the club to either cut across the ball or tops the ball because of the smaller arc.  Many people don't realize a correlation between the straight lead arm and the hip rotation.  If there is no hip rotation, there can not be an extension.

Home Drill.

Stand at home with your arms extended outwards to get a feel for a good extension and body rotation combination.  Keeping your rear arm straight, swing it down past your rear hip and through.  The palm of the rear arm must reach the palm of the lead arm. (without bending your lead arm) You will notice to do this successfully. You need to rotate your hips around to the front.  Also, make sure you have all your weight on your front foot.  Try and do this at home as many times as you can.  Doing this daily, you get a feel for the weight shift, body rotation, and extension all happening together in a nice smooth motion.

Range Drill.

Once you have the correct feel for this motion, head to the range and start adding a ball into the equation.  Start small (called incremental learning) and slowly build up to half, three quarter, and full swings.  You will notice that this weight shift, rotation, and extension is not a violent motion.  It is rather a smooth transition from backswing to follow-through.  This produces a more powerful swing and will help you hit the ball in the middle of the clubface more often!
