Building a Good Golf Swing #3 - Thursday #18.

This week's Golf Video Blog with Mel Sole discusses the third part of developing a sound fundamental golf swing.  The start of the downswing.  This move is critical to delivering the clubhead at maximum velocity and with a square clubface to the ball.

Clap Hands.

Without a club, stand with your arms spread apart.  Swing the rear arm past your rear thigh and clap hands.  You will notice that at this point, both arms are extended out in front of you. This is the first part of understanding weight shift and body rotation.

The easiest way to get the feel of starting the downswing, and more importantly, what moves first, is to take a ball in your trail hand.  Put your lead arm behind your back and toss the ball, underhand, down the fairway.  Close your eyes and be aware of which part of your body moves first. In every case, it is the lead hip!

Now take a golf club and swing it halfway back, and as you swing through, get the same feel of tossing the club down the fairway. Get the feel of the lead hip initiating the start of this movement. Again the arms should finish extended and out in front of you. If they are finishing further than that, you are swinging too hard. Remember, the slower you do any drill, the faster your body learns.

Now introduce the ball. 

Swing the club back to about 9 o clock and through to about 3 o clock feeling the "underhand throw" motion in your swing.
