The Forward Press in Putting was a fairly common thing when I started golf back in 1964.  Today, however, this is not as common, and I'm not really sure why.  Starting from what I call a "dead" position where there is no movement tends to make the takeaway jerky and inconsistent.  The two most notable players that still do the forward press are Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth.

The Forward Press in Putting is to prevent a breakdown of the lead wrist through impact.  When the lead wrist breaks down, the putter's face tends to close, and most putts will be pulled.

The Method.

Stand over the putt in your normal stance and have the putter shaft at 90 degrees to the ground.  Now give a slight forward press with the hands and let the putter start back.  You will notice a lot smoother takeaway, and because you now have a slight forward shaft lean, there will be less tendency to break down through impact. Feel like you are moving your lead wrist towards the target as you putt to keep the putter face square.

Head to the practice putting green to practice this move before you try it on the golf course.  Get comfortable and consistent in the amount you press.  Spend about an hour on this method before heading off to the course, and see your putts go in with more regularity!
