What is a handicap?
The handicap system allows golfers of all skill levels to compete on an equal basis.
A handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's potential playing ability, based on the tees he or she plays from on a given course. For example, someone who has an 18 handicap is generally expected to play a full round of golf with approximately 18 over par. A handicap index makes sure these golfers compete equally even if they have received their handicaps from different courses.

Players may possess the same handicap, but Player A, whose home course is fairly easy and has a low slope rating, plays Player B's tougher course. It gets interesting. Player b must give the player from the easier course an extra shot or two to compensate for the extra degree of difficulty on the higher slope rating.
