How To Start The Backswing

An Easy Way to Improve Your Backswing is an essential component of getting the first part of the takeaway correct. Try this easy drill at home, and linger just a little longer on your pre-shot routine, and you could experience a dramatic improvement not only in your backswing but in your golf game overall.

The V Drill

I call this first part of the V Drill backswing because I want to create a V between my two arms. Both arms stay straight as the club moves back. The arms remain straight until hip height. This is also sometimes known as the one-piece takeaway. This creates a wide arc, creating maximum torque to generate a lot of power on the downswing.

Soft Hands

One of the big keys of the backswing is grip pressure. The pressure should be extremely soft. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being as tight as you can hold the club and 1 being as soft as you can hold the club without dropping it, the correct grip pressure on the backswing should be a 2 or a 3. The soft hands allow the wrists to hinge at the top of the backswing without consciously hinging. As the hands start to slow down towards the top of the swing, the club continues to the top and the wrist hinge naturally.

Finish the Backswing

Now practice taking the club back right from the address position to the top of the backswing in one smooth movement—no breakdown in the arms at the start and no tension in the grip. Now you have an Easy Way to Improve Your Backswing.
