Keep the weight on the Front Foot in the Bunker!

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2 and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools.  Any type of golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

To keep your weight on the front foot when playing a bunker shot is essential to the success of the shot.  A number of years ago while still living in South Africa, I was practicing my bunker shots.  Gary Player made the suggestion I stand on one foot to learn to pivot around my front leg.  This would eliminate any unnecessary movement during my shot.  Well, it helped tremendously, and I went on to become a very good bunker player.

So for those of you that struggle to keep the weight on the front foot, and tend to hit your bunker shots off your back foot, here is a drill to help.

Stand on one leg!

Take your rear foot and place it on the toe, so there is absolutely no weight on the rear leg at all.  Go ahead and hit the shot and finish with the weight still on the front leg.  I would suggest you do this at home on your lawn first, and once it becomes comfortable, hed for the practice bunker!
