Watch as I explain how you can manage your game to lower scores

With spring right around the corner, now's a great time to get an early kick start to your golf game. I share my insights on an oft-neglected area of the game for this month's video golf tip: course management. Course management is so critical to scoring well that you definitely don't want to miss this great advice.

Incorporate your pre-shot routine into your course management.

If you have a 140-yard shot, you do not want to go right away and select your 140-yard club.  Why?  Because this shot might not be playing 140 yards.  Consider wind, elevation (Green higher, more club.  Green lower, less club.)  and lie (if it's not a par 3). Always ask yourself the  question, "Where do I not want to go?"  The answer to that question will help you know where the next shot should land.

Sometimes you don't want to hit the green.  (Even if you can)

Occasionally the lie is so bad that going for the green might not be an option.  At that point, you have to consider where you would like to play the shot after the one you are about to hit.  If there is a hazard near the green, you might want to lay up short.  Trouble is to the side of the green may force u to aim in the opposite direction.

If the flag is fairly close to one side of the green, you want to miss the opposite side.  That way, your next shot is played to a green with plenty of areas to land the ball.  The term "short-sided" is a no-no in good course management.
