Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

In this month's video golf tip, I dispel some myths and provide helpful tips about starting the downswing. Improve this aspect of your game, and you'll stop coming over the top and be rewarded with better distance and accuracy.

Starting the downswing should be completely natural, right?  You've got over the tricky part of getting the club to the top of the backswing. Now just hit!  Not so fast!  The correct sequence in starting the downswing to deliver the clubhead to the ball with the clubface perfectly square and traveling at maximum power can be just as tricky as the backswing.

The Bump.

The very first move of the downswing is a lateral movement of the hips.  This moves the weight from the back foot to the front foot in a nice smooth transition.

Don't be afraid to Exaggerate.

To teach your body this critical move, don't be afraid to exaggerate.  I think you are moving your hips about 12inches.  In actual fact, you will be moving the hips about 4 inches, which is the desired amount.

At-home Practice.

Do this drill at home, over and over again.  It's the repetition, repetition that will engrain this move, so it becomes automatic!
