Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

For this month's video golf tip, I demonstrate the powerful tool of visualization to help you improve your bunker play by visualizing where you want the ball to land before you swing. It's a great stroke-saving technique that might give you that extra edge you've been looking for. Try it and see!

Club Selection.

A bunker shot usually requires a lob wedge or a sand wedge depending on the situation. For example, if the flag is close, the lob wedge would be the right club.  However, if the shot requires more of a run-out towards the flag, a sand wedge would be better.

Technique.

Set the weight on the front foot with the stance slightly open.

Practice Swing.

Do your practice swing over the top of the ball.  It would help if you were looking at your landing spot to determine how hard you need to swing.

Visualize.

I have placed a red cup on the green on the spot where I want to land the ball.  As I do my practice swing over the ball, I want to see the shot flying through the air and landing right in the cup.

Execute.

After the final practice swing, hold your follow-through a little longer and really focus your eyes on the red cup.  Settle down into your address position, and without looking up again, execute the shot.  You don't want to look up because you have done such a great job of picturing the shot and have a clear idea of what you need to do. Why spoil that picture by looking again.  Trust your instinct and swing away!
