Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

Most of the golfers I work with daily slice the ball. One of the two main causes is "coming over the top," which I have covered in detail in previous tips. The other is the failure to release the hands, meaning the lower hand crosses over the upper hand. This enables the golfer to square the clubface to hit the ball straight. The release is a movement that most amateurs struggle with at first.  But some practice on the range to get the feel of the correct amount of turn, and away they go!

The Flaw.

Most of the golfers who slice look like this through impact. Notice that the right hand is still under the left and the clubface is in an "open" position.

The Cure.

Picture #2 shows the correct position as the hand's release through impact.

Here is a drill I gave to a recently having great difficulty releasing no matter how hard he tried. Stand with your back facing the target and the ball position off your toe line as in picture #3 below.

Now go ahead and hit the ball: you will automatically release your hands through impact, and you literally cannot slice the ball.

Work on this drill for a while to get the correct feel of the hands turning through impact, and then go back to your normal stance and try to reproduce this feeling.  You have now discovered Another sure cure for slicers! Your slice will be gone forever!
