Many Americans have traveled "Over the Pond" to visit and play either Scotland or Ireland.  Not many have gone over to play courses in England.  I don't know why that is, as there are just as many great golf courses in England.  Where2Golf.com gives us some insight into the "Big 3" of British golf.  The Top 3 Courses in Britain Certainly makes me want to go over and play right now!

The "Three Lions" of British Golf

Think about where to golf in the British Isles. Two countries invariably spring to mind – Scotland and Ireland. Revered and excellent as they are, there’s a lot more golf to be found if you venture beyond the “Home of Golf” and the “Emerald Isle.”

In Wales, the Channel Isles and the Isle of Man you’ll find many excellent courses. However, in golfing terms, England is arguably the “hidden gem” of the British Isles.

England’s golfing landscape embraces a wide variety of layouts. Heathland and moorland courses, seaside links, tree-lined parkland layouts and legendary Ryder Cup locations are all in the mix. Here you’ll also find four of the current nine Open Championship venues.

Although great courses are found in the length and breadth of the English realm, three particular areas stand out.

The Lancashire Coast:

Here on the dune-filled seashore of the “Red Rose” county, sometimes referred to as “England’s Golf Coast,” you’ll find a links golf paradise.

One of the world’s greatest stretches of “sandhills golf” awaits as you journey south from Royal Lytham & St Annes. You’ll need to skirt round the Ribble Estuary and then head down to Liverpool.  Stopping in at Royal Birkdale along the way. If you overshoot the “Home of The Beatles” and end up crossing the Mersey to the Wirral Peninsula, then no problem. You can add Royal Liverpool to your itinerary.

If three Open Championship venues don’t satisfy your golfing appetite, then try any of the other excellent links courses that sit on either side of the “Royal” triumvirate. Courses like Caldy, Fairhaven, Formby, Hesketh, Heswall, Hillside, Southport & Ainsdale, Wallasey and West Lancs will not disappoint.

The Kent coast:

A short distance north of the White Cliffs of Dover, you’ll find three close neighbors that have all hosted the Open Championship. Royal St George’s (still on the Open roster), Royal Cinque Ports and Prince’s sit cheek by jowl on a dune-filled stretch of Kent coast between the towns of Sandwich and Deal.  All three courses are standard-bearers for English links golf.

Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St George’s are two of nineteen English golf clubs with a Royal prefix conferred by the sovereign.

Kent is the nearest English county of the European continent and is only 30 minutes drive from the Eurotunnel Folkestone terminal. Look up Kent's top golf courses.

Surrey / Berkshire heathland:

Between 1890 and 1910, as golf rapidly developed throughout Britain, golfers in the nation’s capital eagerly sought land on which to indulge their newfound pastime. In the counties of Surrey and Berkshire, an expansive area of fast-draining, gently undulating, open heathland proved ideal terrain for golf to the south and west of London.

Today the legacy of golf course development on “the heath” is found amongst the many top-quality golf clubs in Surrey and Berkshire.

Among the best are The Berkshire, Hankley Common, New Zealand, Sunningdale, Swinley Forest and St George's Hill. There’s also a powerful collection of W’s, including Walton Heath, Wentworth, Woking, West Hill and Worplesdon (the last three are known collectively as the three W’s).
