Today I talk about staying connected on both the backswing and downswing.

This drill required one of my favorite teaching aids - an alignment stick.  I use this for so many drills, and this one gives you phenomenal feedback on whether you are staying connected or not.

What is Staying connected?

Staying connected means your arms stay relatively close to the body on the backswing.  Many golfers will either cock the writs too soon or allow the arms to move away from the body, making it almost impossible to get into a position on the backswing to start the downswing correctly!

Address.

Take an alignment stick and push about two feet through the small hole in the back end of the grip. Go into your address position.

Backswing.

As you start, the backswing part of the alignment stick must stay connected to your body.  Please do not allow any part of it to move away. At about the halfway stage back, the wrists will start to hinge, and the alignment stick should be pointing to where the ball would be (put a ball there for reference). The club is now "on plane," so go back and complete your backswing, trying to make as full a shoulder turn as your can.

Downswing.

As you start the downswing with the hips' lateral movement, the alignment stick will start dropping down.  Try and hold the angle between the stick and your forearm s long as you can.  Again halfway down, the stick should be pointing at the ball, giving you the feeling of lag.

The follow-through should be down the line, and the alignment stick should again move along the body without actually hitting you.  Drill complete.  Redo as many times as necessary to get the right feel!
