Today we talk about the situation of the rule that happened over the weekend with Sergio Garcia. Knowing the rules saved him at least a stroke and allowed him to make a par, allowing him to stay in the top 30 and move forward to the Tour Championship next week at Eastlake.
Sergio Garcia found himself needing a par on the final hole to make it into the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings. This would allow him to move on to the Tour Championship at Eastlake the following week.
He pushed his second shot, and the ball found the hazard on the right. Sergio contended to the rules official that if he played the ball backward out of the hazard, his swing would be obstructed by an immovable obstruction. The rules state that if an immovable obstruction interferes with the swing, you get a free drop. Sergio had to drop in the hazard. But now the ball was playable towards the green. Again, there is nothing in the rule that says you have to play in the same direction as you were going to before the free drop. Sergio managed to get the ball out of the hazard and across the green. Another chip to 5 feet and a putt put him in the following week's tournament! Great thinking, Sergio!
