To ensure that the grasses get sufficient water, more and more golf courses have installed irrigation systems.  This is to keep the grasses healthy.  It also assists their recovery and provides a better putting surface. Most sprinkler systems are automated, requiring a sprinkler control box, which is also part of the sprinkler system.

Sprinkler heads around putting greens can sometimes lead to confusion.  Golfers are not sure whether they get relief or not.  In this video, I try to clarify the various procedures that are available to the golfer.

Interference on the line of play.

Rule 24 - 2b states that except when the ball is in a water hazard or a lateral water hazard, a player may take relief from interference by an immovable obstruction as follows:

If the ball lies through the green, the player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, within one club's length and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief. The nearest point of relief must not be in a hazard or on a putting green. When the ball is dropped within one club length of the nearest point of relief, the ball must first strike a part of the course at a spot that avoids interference by the immovable obstruction and is not in a hazard and not on a putting green.

Exception:

Appendix l, Part A permits a Local Rule providing relief from intervention by immovable obstructions on or within two club-lengths of the putting green when the ball lies within two club-lengths of the immovable obstruction.
