Today I talk about the incident that happened to me over 50 years ago.  I was playing in my very first PGA Tour event.  The Pepsi Open.  Very excited, I went down to the first tee and teed off.  I pulled my drive slightly and was about one foot in the rough.  When I got to my ball, there was another ball lying right next to mine.  I was playing a Slazenger.  The other ball was also a Slazenger. They were both the same number and both brand new.  I called my playing partner and indicated I would pick up one ball and play the other, seeing they were only a foot apart and the same lie.

I was informed that that is not how it works.  Because I could not identify my ball, I returned to the tee and played another ball with a stroke and distance penalty.  Play 3 off the tee.  I made a double bogey on my first professional tournament because of a lack of knowledge of the rules.  I will never do that again!

Take a Sharpie and mark all the balls in your golf bag, preferably with the same mark.  This way, your golf ball is unique, and you will always be able to identify your ball!
