Every golfer's goal should be to play a round of golf without any mechanical thoughts about the swing and have a great tempo from the 1st tee to the 18th green. The key to attaining this is what I teach at my golf school, and we call it "The Clear Key." The clear key is a word or phrase you say to yourself while hitting the ball. Sometimes to make it easier to understand, I call it a Mantra. The clear key blocks the conscious mind from thinking mechanics and turns the golf swing into a beautiful rhythmical motion.
The Importance of the Clear Key!
- It MUST be non-golf-related.
- Choose a word or phrase that matches the rhythm of your swing.
- The impact must be at the same place within the clear key. If you do that, you will develop a rhythm that will be constant from #1 to #18!
Some players have a fast swing, like Lanny Wadkins, and some have a slow swing like Ernie Els. Find the clear key that matches your personality and stick with it. If you live up north and don't play in the winter, your first game in the spring will have the same tempo as your last game in the fall. Enjoy thought-free golf for the rest of your golfing days!
