Good Footwork - Trouble Shot Tuesday #64.

This week's theme is feet and ankles.  Using the feet to feel the texture will help decide which club to play the most successful shot.

Good footwork is like good wine.  The better it is, the more enjoyment you get out of it.  Watch as I demonstrate some nifty footwork in the bunker!

Why dig my feet in the sand?

Golfers think that digging the feet in the sand helps them lower their bodies.  As a result, they can hit behind the ball.  Or they dig their feet in for good footing.  Both those suppositions are wrong.  You dig your feet in the sand to feel the texture of the sand.  You can use this valuable information for the other two headings below.

Club Selection.

The texture of the sand is going to determine what club to use.  If the sand is hard, you need a club with very little bounce.  A 60-degree lob wedge will usually do the job.  A sand wedge has too much bounce for hard sand, and the club will skid into the ball, blading it over the green.

Furthermore, if the sand is soft and fluffy, plenty of bounce is needed to prevent the club from digging too deep.  The "flange" on the club's bottom acts like a hydroplane and allows it to glide through the sand quite easily.

How hard should I swing?

Usually, you want to swing twice as hard as a pitch shot of the same distance.  For example, if I had a 20-yard bunker shot, I would swing as hard as a 40-yard pitch shot.  Because I am hitting 2" behind the ball in a bunker shot, the ball will not go as far.
