Getting the Max out of your New Driver.
What is ‘Effective Loft?’
Before we get into the bells and whistles, let’s take a moment to discuss a topic that many people don’t understand. Effective loft.
Back in 2013 I asked manufacturers how distance is affected with specific adjustment settings. Specifically new drivers and fairway woods. And I got decent feedback from those in the equipment industry. For every golf club retailer that takes the time to explain this concept to a consumer, there’s probably 100 others who never address the issue. Don't take this topic lightly.
Long story short, “effective loft” refers to how much loft your driver has at impact. This can differ greatly from whatever loft your club is currently set to. And can also change with your individual swing. For instance, the position of your hands in relation to the golf ball at impact — ahead of, behind, or neutral — will artificially decrease or increase the effective loft that club has when it contacts the ball.
So what does this have to do with adjustable drivers?
Trial and Error Method.
This is either a trial and error method on the driving range. Hitting shots and adjusting the driver loft higher or lower until you get the desired trajectory.
Visit a Clubfittier.
Or a visit to a club-fitter or professional who has a launch monitor. Launch monitors will be able to give you launch angle, ball speed, spin, total airtime, and total roll. You need to take all of these factors into consideration so that by utilizing the adjustabilities on your driver, you can get the maximum distance you are capable of!
