Three-putting is something every golfer hates!  It seems such a waste of a stroke.  Even the Tour players 3 putt, but they absolutely hate it!  So how do you prevent 3 putting?  By training your subconscious to know exactly how hard to hit the putt for any distance!

The Method.

The principle I use is the same as a basketball player shooting hoops.  The player practices from different distances, and if the shot comes up short, he shoots the next one a little harder.  If the ball goes too far, the next shot is a little softer.  He will continue shooting, all the while training his subconscious on how hard to shoot.  When he plays in a game, he gets the ball and shoots it all in one motion because his subconscious knows exactly how hard it is to shoot.

So we do the same thing on the golf course practice putting green.  We are shooting hoops with a putter.  Go into your normal putting stance, but instead of looking at the ball, you will look at the hole.  Go ahead and hit your putt.  If the putt is too hard, the next one is hit slightly softer.  If it's too soft, the next one is harder.  You continue to hit putts looking at the hole until you have hit about 24 balls.

Now go and practice to a different hole, maybe the complete opposite of the one you have just done.  The first time you do this drill, do it from 30 to 35 minutes to get the feel embedded into your subconscious.

When you are on the golf course playing for score.

When you are on the golf course, playing for score, do your practice swings next to the ball, looking at the hole.  Then step up to the ball and hit your putt, this time looking at the ball.  Over time you will be surprised how much more accurate you will be in hitting those first putts close (or even in) to the hole!

I have been doing this drill for years, and I have almost eliminated 3 putting from my game.  According to my current stats, I three-putt once every 4 rounds.  That saves me a lot of strokes in a round of golf!
