Today I clarify what "casual water" is and what to do when you face this situation in a bunker.  Knowing the rules will always save you shots on the golf course.  Follow along as I show the various options for taking relief from casual water in a bunker.

What is Casual Water?

"Casual water" is any temporary accumulation of water on the course that is not in a water hazard and is visible before or after the player takes his stance. Snow and natural ice, other than frost, are either casual water or loose impediments, at the player's option.  Manufactured ice is an obstruction.

Where can I drop?

You may drop the ball in the bunker, keeping the drop point between the original ball position and the hole without penalty.

Is there a penalty?

As mentioned previously, there is normally no penalty for taking relief from casual water in a bunker.  However, if there is no area of relief in the bunker that fits the criteria of dropping the ball, keeping that point between where the ball lay and the hole, the player is forced to drop outside the bunker.  Now there is a one-stroke penalty for dropping the ball outside of the bunker.  Not fair, I know, but there it is!
