If you think the Pro's are Going to have it hard at Oakmont this week, forget about it!

Derek Clements, writing for SwingbySwing.com, reminds us that there have been some brutal courses in the past.  Ask Phil Mickelson about Oakmont in 2007, or Ben Hogan in 1955 when he lost in a playoff to Jack Fleck after finishing with a 7 over par total of 287!

Every year the world’s best professional golfers turn up to play in the US Open, and every year there is a chorus of disapproval about the unfairness of the course. Usually, it concerns the speed of the greens and the USGA’s uncanny ability to put the flags in the most devilish of places.

Geoff Ogilvy, a former champion, once said the hardest part of the US Open was going over par early in the round and wondering if you’ll ever get back to even par.

1974, WINGED FOOT.

5 Brutal US Open Courses

This became known as the “Massacre at Winged Foot,” though to most people it looked to be a case of the USGA getting its own back. A year earlier at Oakmont, Johnny Miller became the first player to shoot 63 in the US Open, and he remains the only player to do so in the final round of golf’s toughest test. The USGA made sure that didn’t happen at Winged Foot.

It was so difficult that no one was under par after any of the four rounds. The low score of the tournament was 67 by Hubert Green, and that was after he opened with an 81.

Tom Watson took the 54-hole lead at three-over 213. But Winged Foot got its own back when needed 41 shots on the back nine on the final day. Hale Irwin closed with a 73 to win the first of his three US Opens. Irwin won at 7-over 287. There has not been a higher winning score in relation to par at any major since.
