Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

A high percentage of golfers have problems getting the ball airborne with fairways woods, particularly women. Indeed, fairway woods are an exact club that demands perfect technique. In this video golf tip, I discuss the keys to hitting fairway woods solidly.  And share the "Extension Drill" to help you have more success with these difficult shots.

Follow along as I teach you the one big key to Master The Fairway Woods.  Controlling the bottom of the arc!

The Extension Drill.

To do the extension drill, take any club, preferably a short iron like a 9 iron, and swing back halfway and then swing through, keeping the lead arm completely extended.  Almost to the point of being rigid!  There cannot be any breakdown in that lead arm at all!  Once you have taught yourself to keep the lead arm straight, move to a fairway wood, and do the same drill.  Sweeping the ball off the ground right at the bottom of the arc.

Controlling the bottom of the arc.

By swinging the fairway wood back and forth without a ball but brushing the grass each time the clubhead swings through, you are confirming that you have the ability to control the arc.

The full swing.

You can now go ahead and swing away, making sure that even when you hit the ball, the bottom of the club brushes the grass, and the ball comes off the middle of the clubface!
