Inspired by Matt Kuchar,  I demonstrate a novel way to use the controversial belly putter.  If you've scoffed at belly putters in the past, you'll want to watch this video and take another look, particularly if you have trouble with the backward bending of your left wrist before impact. Wrist breakdown is probably the #1 reason golfers are inconsistent in their putting and believe it or not, the longer belly putter can help.  Mel was so impressed by this technique that he's using this style putter occasionally on the putting green when he is working on putting technique.

The Method.

Take the handle part of the belly putter and place it against your lead forearm.  Take your normal putting grip.  When hitting putts, try and keep the handle firmly pressed against your forearm.  This prevents any breakdown of the lead wrist.  If you see the butt end of the club move away from your forearm, you know you are breaking down.  Take a rubber band and place it around the grip and your forearm.  You will feel the rubber band changing tension when the breakdown occurs—more instant feedback.

The Benefit.

Even if you don't use this as your regular putter, the benefits of using this as a practice putter are enormous.  I use this putter about once a month when I am working on my putting technique.
