Knowing how far you hit half and three-quarter shots with various clubs in your golf bag can help you lower your scores significantly.  Using a portable mini launch monitor to help you work on these distances is essential.  The latest model is called the NEW Voice Caddie Swing Caddie SC100 Portable Golf Launch Monitor and sells around $180.00.

When you are using this device on the range, keep a notebook handy. (Keep the notebook in the top pocket of your golf bag so you can access it quickly on the golf course.)

Hit around 10 shots with each club in your bag.  Both at the half shot and three quarter shot levels and jot down your distances.  Take the average for each set of 10.  You now know exactly how far each of these shots goes.  The next time you are in the trees and need a low punch-out to get your ball back in play, you will know which club to hit the precise distance you need and lower your scores.
