Width is better than Length for Power!

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2 and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Most of the students I work with seem to think that the longer the swing, the further they will hit the ball. A wider swing produces more torque in the body.  This allows the body to load up on the back foot, storing up power just waiting to be unleashed at the ball.  Start the downswing uncoiling the body.  Tremendous clubhead speed and thus more distance will result!

In picture #1, the student (in this case, my wife Rose) is in a position I see every week at the school.  In an attempt to swing long, the left arm has broken down, and the weight is still over on the front foot causing a "reverse pivot."

To get into a powerful position, the sternum should be over the back foot. This puts the weight on the rear leg, ready to transfer the weight to the front!

In picture #2, Rose's position is good.  The left arm is fully extended, the weight over on the back foot.  A good shoulder turn allows her to swing freely through the ball with effortless power.  If you notice, the shoulder turn in both pictures is about the same.  However, with the slightly shorter swing and tighter coil, both the distance and accuracy will be improved.

Using a mirror will really help in this case.  Remember, there is always perception and reality.  You will see in the mirror that even though the swing feels shorter, the shoulder is still at more than 90 degrees. Using a mirror will remove the doubt that sometimes invades the subconscious on the practice tee or the course.
