Uneven Lies, Part 4 - Sidehill - Ball Below the Feet

Uneven Lies, Part 4 – Sidehill – Ball Below the Feet

This is our August 1998 Monthly Golf Tip Uneven Lies Part 4 – Sidehill  – Ball Below the Feet brought to you by Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.

Uneven Lies, Part 4 – Sidehill – Ball Below the Feet

This is the 4th in our series of uneven lies.  Today we tackle the most difficult of all sloping lies.  Uneven Lies, Part 4 – Sidehill – Ball Below the Feet  As you can see from picture #1 the ball is below my feet and I am in a position I see frequently on the course with my students.  Too much bend in the knees in order to reach the ball.

Picture #1

This will tend to make you raise up as you swing through causing you to top the ball.

Now in Picture #2 I have kept my legs at their normal flex and bent over more from the waist.

Now as long as I keep my spine angle, I will not raise up.

  1. Here are a few suggestions for the sidehill lie:
  2. Keep your normal knee flex and bend a little more from the waist.
  3. Keep the backswing short – if you try to swing to your normal position there will be a tendency to raise up
  4. Take one more club (an 8 instead of a 9)
  5. Aim to the left as the ball will have a tendency to fade or go to the right (for right-handed golfers)

As I have mentioned in all 4 of these tips, finding a practice facility with uneven lies is tough.  So use the golf course when it is not busy.  That way you can hit uneven lie shots in playing conditions which will do tons for your confidence when you are playing for a score!
