The High Bunker Shot by Mel Sole.

This is our September 1998 Monthly Golf Tip The High Bunker Shot by Mel Sole. Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.

Sometimes a deep greenside bunker can be a little intimidating.  However, knowing the correct technique will have you hitting these shots with confidence in no time.  Remember, reading this article will not improve your bunker play.  Going out to the practice bunker and working on these techniques will!

As you can see in Picture #1 I have a high bank in front of me. I address the ball slightly towards the front foot.

The real secret of this shot is to really open the clubface. The biggest fear people have is that the ball will go to the right. (for right-handed golfers) Understand that the ball will travel in the direction of the clubhead path and not the clubface angle, so don’t be afraid to open the clubface – just make sure that you follow-through to the target, as in picture #2. This is the real key to all bunker shots.  Your belt buckle must be facing the target when you have completed your swing!

Swing harder than you normally would because the ball will not fly as far with the clubface being more open than usual.

Here are a few rules:

  1. Open the clubface at address.
  2. Grip the club very lightly.
  3. Hit approximately 2” behind the ball.
  4. Make sure you follow through to the target!
