Many golfers don’t realize just how much their body moves when putting. In this month’s Mel in Motion video golf tip, Mel provides us with a helpful drill you can do on the putting green, or at your home or office, that will help minimize body movement and give you tremendous improvements with your putting stroke.


When I show my students their putting stroke on video, they are shocked how much movement they have.  Of course, body movement in the putting stoke makes it almost impossible to keep the putter moving consistently through the ball.  Keeping the body still is imperative.  So why do people move?  They don’t realize that they are!  So golfers need some sort of aid to help them get feedback when they do move.  Enter a simple teaching aid – the chair!

Use a chair where to back of the chair is about the same height as the back of your thighs.  


When you get into your putting posture with the chair touching the back of your thighs, you are going to get instant feedback when you move.  Take a few strokes and you will immediately feel if there is any movement.  You can do this at home in your living room with your putter and a few balls.  It is fun to watch the expression of my students the first time they do this.  There is a look of great surprise on their faces.  They did not realize that they moved so much.

Spend some time working on this until you can hit some long putts and not feel any movement.  If you want to really eliminate all movement, get into your putting posture and place your head against a wall.  Get someone to place the chair behind your thighs.  Please the toe of the putter against the baseboard. and swing the putter back and through.  Once you can do this consistently without moving either your head or your lower body, you will have mastered a great putting stroke.

Then your putting on the course will improve dramatically.
