Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2 and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools.  Any type of golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

Most golfers do not give each shot their complete attention for a full round.

Here are a few things you should take into consideration before each shot.  Please note that these things will become a habit after a short time and you will not have to take much extra time over the shot.  Some of these things (like wind) you can decide even before you get to your ball.

  1. Where do I not want to go.  This sounds obvious, but I have seen top PGA Tour players make poor decisions on this one.
  2.  Where do I want to go?  One the green or next to the flag is not always the right answer.  If there is trouble on the left, you want to err slightly right (or visa versa)
  3.  Wind.  Is the wind strong enough to influence the ball.  Remember to take consideration of the wind high up (by looking at the tops of the trees) rather than ground level.  The ball is going to be flying high!
  4.  Elevation.  Is the target higher or lower than you are.  If higher, take more club.  If lower, less club.
  5. Lie.  If this is not a tee shot where the ball is teed up, the lie is crucial to the execution of the shot.
  6.  Finally, the distance the shot is playing.  NOT the distance between you and the target.  By taking all of these factors into account, you can come up with the actual yardage the shot is playing.  Take your club for THAT distance!

If you want to lower your scores this year without changing your swing or spending time on the range, this is definitely a way to lower your scores.

Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods were masters of managing their game no matter what the circumstances.
