As we get older, our distance decreases because our swing speed decreases. Less swing speed means more shaft flex is needed. With more flex, call it 'Senior Flex,' the clubface moves faster throughout the swing, which results in more distance.

Seniors also should carry Hybrids in their bags. They are easier to hit than low irons and generally add more distance and consistency. They also help golfers to get out of trouble spots, like mulch, etc.

What about the Driver? Other than recommending you purchase one with more loft, I will give you an answer to all further questions by saying . . . . Get a Club Fitting with an experienced fitter. Everyone is of a different size and skill level, and your clubs need to be personally fitted to your individual swing.

Here is what Senior Golfers should look for when thinking of choosing new clubs.

Suggestions for Seniors choosing new clubs.

1. Driver - Loft -

Choose a Driver with at least 11 to 12 degrees of loft.  As club head speed decreases, it is harder to get the ball in the air.

                   Shaft -

Depending on clubhead speed, either Senior flex or even a Ladies flex.  Don't let your ego get in the way of hitting the ball a little further.

                   Length -

Get a driver an inch shorter - this will increase the center of clubface hits. Clubfitters call it "Smash Factor"  When you hit the ball in the center, it goes further with less clubhead speed.   Increase accuracy and add distance.

2. Hybrids.

Hybrids have replaced long irons, and even PGA Tour players now have at least one hybrid in the bag.  For seniors, replace your 3,4 and 5 irons with hybrids. They will help not only on the fairway but also because the shaft is slightly longer. You will generate more clubhead speed and get the ball out of the rough easier.

3. Irons - Get graphite shafts in your irons.  The weight saved by using graphite allows for an overall lighter club which will be easier to hit for seniors.

4. Wedges.

Get 4 wedges.  A lob wedge (or 60 degree), a sand wedge (or 56 degree), a gap wedge (or 52 degree), and a pitching wedge.  These are your scoring clubs.  Take a few lessons with a good teaching professional who can show you how to lower your scores by using these clubs efficiently around the green.

5. Putter.

When looking for a new putter, the biggest mistake golfers make is going into a store, picking up a putter, and saying, "I like the feel of this one"  You are not going to "feel" anything in a store.  Take four or five putters to the putting green and spend at least 10 to 15 minutes with each putter: long putts, short putts.  Try and get a feel for how the ball comes off the putter face.  Does it feel "hard" or "soft"? Which of those feels do you prefer.  Visually, how does the putter look to you?  This is your scoring club, don't rush into buying the first putter you see or heard about on a TV commercial.
