A Video Blog all about good course management that will help your game without changing your swing! Just good thinking. Today we talk about understanding how to prepare for a severe sidehill lie. How far down to grip the club, how far to the right you need to aim, and how to ensure you hit the ball in the middle of the clubface!
Mel Sole gave Tommy Fleetwood an example playing in a European Tour event and made a critical error by not taking the lie into account. He had a sidehill lie, and he correctly aimed to the right and gripped the club shorter but did not consider that the ball was sitting well up in the grass. He needed to take an extra club and grip it shorter to make solid contact with the ball.
Sometimes a good lie is not a good thing. If the ball is sitting up in the grass, striking the ball high up on the clubface is a danger. This will give you a "dead" shot. The ball will come off the clubface very soft and will lose a tremendous amount of distance. Pay attention to that the next time you are in the rough. Try and sweep the ball off the top of the grass instead of hitting the normal downward blow with an iron. You'll get a lot more solid contact with the ball!
