Pay Attention to Good Footwork in the Golf Swing!

Good Footwork is often neglected in the golf swing.  Good footwork will not only add yards to your shots but help you make good solid contact. It will prevent hitting behind the ball.  Poor weight shift causes golfers to hit behind the ball. Understanding the role of the feet throughout the golf swing is critical.

Back Foot:  The rear foot should be at about 90 degrees to the target line and the weight should be slightly on the inside of the foot.  If you stand slightly knock-kneed you will feel the weight there.  As the backswing starts, keep the weight on the inside of the rear foot.  Do not allow the weight to move to the outside of the rear foot as this will make it difficult to shift the weight back to the lead foot before the club gets to the ball.

Front Foot:  The front foot should be flared out about 30 degrees.  I see many golfers with the front foot pointing straight out in front, but this makes the hip rotation through the ball a lot more difficult.  On the backswing allow the foot to roll to the inside and if you wish even lift the front foot slightly.  This will make for a better hip turn and as a result, a better shoulder turn. As the downswing starts, the weight moves to the outside of the front foot.  As the hip clears on the downswing, the weight will eventually move to the heel and the rear foot will come up onto the toe.  This completes the swing and you have now achieved a good weight shift and a good body rotation!
